43. Sam’s Anchor Cafe

Today was too nice a day to eat inside, so my friend and architect extraordinaire, Dean Jones, and I walked the few short blocks from his office in downtown Tiburon to Sam’s for lunch on the deck. This is absolutely an ideal spot to hang out for lunch, drinks or dinner on a typically warm, sunny day, which Tiburon gets more than its fair share of.

Sam’s has an expansive deck out over the water, covered with tables (interspersed with heat lamps for chilly days or nights) and usually crowded with diners, a mix of locals and tourists. People are pretty much always in a good mood, because what’s not to be thrilled about – the views: the yacht harbor, San Francisco, Belvedere and Alcatraz; the service: very friendly, attentive and speedy; and the food: very tasty, fresh and reasonably priced (not cheap but, admit it, part of what you’re paying for is the location).

Sam’s opens for brunch at 9:30 on the weekends, and a great outing starts with brunch here followed by a ferry ride out to hike Angel Island (see #22 Angel Island – Tiburon Ferry). Then, of course, back to Sam’s for a drink to wind down your oh-so-busy day!
