Muffins got popular with the public probably about 30 years ago. Before that, they were pretty small and plain, with bran and blueberry being pretty much the only varieties you saw. Then, they caught on and took off in popularity. It seemed like everywhere you looked there was a new muffin shop. Well, San Rafael’s most famous muffin place, Muffin Mania, opened in 1983 and has been going strong since.
They offer 30 varieties of muffins, which is more than I’ve ever seen anywhere else. And, about half of them are vegan, and a few more are gluten-free, which makes it easy for everyone to find a variety they love every day. I like their offer of buy 10 muffins get 2 free. It makes a great treat for everyone at the office!
Speaking of love, there are a lot of customers who have been coming here since it opened, and who have a great love for the owners and staff. The same family that started the cafe still owns and operates it, and they’re known for their warmth and devotion to their business and the neighborhood.
They serve a wide variety of other breakfast pastries including savory croissant sandwiches, and have a long list of sandwiches and salads at lunch.
Muffin Mania is in the Gerstle Park neighborhood, near Safeway, at the corner of Bayview and Taylor. (map)
