51. Muir Beach

The sun has broken through and everyone is feeling stir crazy, so it’s the perfect time to throw everyone and the dog in the car and head to the beach for some running around and fresh air.  Muir Beach is the perfect destination. It’s a beautiful but short drive out Shoreline Highway from Mill Valley, and this time of year there’s hardly anyone there, which is good because it’s not a large beach.

Dogs are allowed as long as you keep them under control, which means no allowing them to get in the creek or forage in the wetlands. But, they’ve got the beach for running, retrieving and playing in the surf.

It is a surfing beach, too, so you’ll see surfers and a few other brave souls in the water. Once the weather warms up, it’s a refreshing dip, but not right now.

On the weekends, the ranger is usually in the parking lot to answer questions and be a great nature guide. The parking lot is free, good-sized, and has toilets.

Where: On Pacific Way, just off Highway 1 in the town of Muir Beach (map)
