Last week my clients, Marla and Todd, relocating up here from Southern California, introduced me to a new cafe. Turns out it’s not new at all. In fact, Hilda’s Coffee Shop is probably the oldest cafe in San Anselmo, with an opening date of 1960.
It’s right there on San Anselmo Avenue, in the main section of downtown, and I’ve driven by it countless times, never noticing it. Well, from the photo I’ve got here, you can see why you can miss it – very unobtrusive. From what I’ve now experienced, and what I’ve heard from local fans, it’s got a very long and loyal following, including kids who love the Mickey Mouse pancakes.
Their breakfasts are great, and the service is truly the friendliest, most sincere you’ll find anywhere. You feel like you’re in a bit of a time warp, where the waitresses really like serving their customers and take the time to get to know them.
Speaking of their younger fans, they’ve got a corner in the front of the restaurant that’s a kid’s diversions area – books and some small toys. Great when you’re trying to draw out a meal and your kids have lost patience with you.
Be prepared – cash only!
