116. Marin Arts Open Studios

Get out your calendar and mark the first two weekends in May for the Marin Arts Open Studios annual event. Note that this event takes place throughout the entire county, where artists in pretty much every city and town in Marin open up their art studios to the public on Saturday and Sunday, May 7th – 8th and again the next weekend on the 14th – 15th.

Over 250 artists’ studios will be open, and last year over 50,000 visitors toured them, which makes it the largest public art event in the County. It is hosted by the Marin Arts Council, which supports the creation of art and facilitating access to the arts. They’ve produced an amazing Tour Guide 2011 which can be downloaded free.

A good strategy for planning your tour is to first visit the Marin Arts Exhibition Gallery in downtown San Rafael at 906 4th Street where every artist on the tour will have one piece of art on display. The piece will be labeled with a number that corresponds to the artist’s location on the Open Studios map. The Exhibition Gallery will be open 10 days before the first Open Studios weekend, Wednesday – Saturday, starting April 27th and closing May 21st. It will also be open Sunday, May 8th and May 15th. The map isn’t available yet but should be any day (I’ll update the post when it is).
