There will be a number of Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Marin this Thursday, but here’s a fun one that’s on Saturday, the 7th, when the whole family can get out to enjoy it. It’s the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at the Bay Area Discovery Museum and it’s one of their four cultural festivals of the year.
The festival runs all day, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., but there are some special activities at 11:00 and noon that you won’t want to miss.
The first is the outdoor dance performance by Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Carlos Moreno, one of the premier ballet folklorico dance companies in the country. It will feature dances and costumes representing the wide variety of styles and geographic sub-cultures of Mexican life. Then, at noon, the youth Mariachi Band “Los Cachorros” will perform which is a real treat because the only time many of us hear mariachi music is at a Mexican restaurant performed by adults.
Studio 10 will also be featuring Mexican crafts-making of “recuerdos” (memories). Kids will be able to make either a paper flower or a tin ornament. And, finally, the Discovery Cafe will feature a Mexican-themed lunch menu with spicy grilled chicken, tacos, Mexican pastries and Agua Frescas (traditional Mexican fresh fruit drinks).
