151. Hairspray – Mountain Play

We are in the thick of the Mountain Play season, and it’s not too late to get tickets for June’s performances. This year the play is Hairspray, the Broadway Musical, the 2003 Tony Award Winning Best Musical.

For those who have never attended, Mountain Play is a very uniquely Marin outdoor theatrical event held on the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais. Each year, on Sundays during May and June, Mountain Play presents a play in the Cushing Memorial Amphitheatre to a crowd of about 4,000. But, it’s far more than just a play. It’s basically a full-day event, with seating opening at 9:00 and the play starting at 2:00 and wrapping up sometime around 4:30.

Since the seating is general admission, many people get there early to grab a good seat. And, many bring quite a spread of gourmet picnic food, for dining on throughout the day. In fact, it’s such a big deal that there is actually a picnic contest on June 19th, judged last year by Roland Passot, James Beard Winner and owner of the Left Bank.

You do not, however, need to bring any food at all, because there is a wide variety of food and drinks sold there, including wine and beer.

One thing that you should definitely bring or rent is a stadium seat, because you’ll be sitting on rock seats and they are hard and uneven and get uncomfortable very quickly! These, by the way, are the only seats allowed, so don’t bring beach chairs, even the ones with short legs, because they’ll take them away!

How to Get There: Highly recommended to park in Mill Valley and take the free shuttle. There’s very little parking on the mountain. Click here for information.
