208. Arizmendi

The original Arizmendi opened in Oakland in about 1999, and was a huge hit from the start. The concept of a cooperative bakery where the workers owned the business made their incredible food even more palatable. Fast forward to 2010, and Arizmendi opens its 6th cooperative on 4th Street in San Rafael, its first in Marin. Like the others before it, the recipes and baking methods have been honed to perfection and deliver products of exceptional quality.

I took a friend to Arizmendi today for her first visit. She’s just moved to San Rafael and is looking for some great food spots. We needed a quick afternoon lunch so we both got their pizza of the day, which can be found ahead of time daily on their pizza calendar. You can buy it by the slice and you can also buy a partially baked pizza to take home. Their pizza is as good as any I’ve had in Marin.

Their breads are incredible and they always have a wide selection. I love that they make them as rolls, too, so you don’t have to buy a whole loaf if you just want a quick snack. Their scones, muffins and cookies are also absolutely delicious, no kidding. So, regardless if you need bread for the pantry or scones for breakfast, this is the place to head.

One final note. I had a double treat when I went back up to get some cookies to round off our meal today, and I recognized one of my son’s elementary school classmates from Oakland behind the counter – hadn’t seen Sophie in 12 years! Very cool!
