It’s great to see that there are some independent book sellers still making it in this era of digital media (mea culpa) and super-store book sellers going bust. Book Passage in Corte Madera seems to be positively thriving, probably because there are so many good reasons to visit.
This Book Passage (there’s one in the Ferry Building in SF, too) has two spaces; the one in front has books and the cafe, and the one in back has books, used books, the lecture room and various non-book items. Part of the back space is the Hospice Books room, where a portion of the sales of the used books in it go to support Hospice of Marin – very cool. There’s also a patio dining area that they both open onto.
Book Passage’s tagline is “The Bay Area’s Liveliest Bookstore” and their incredible events calendar has something to do with it. Every single week they’ve got daily book signings or classes. They bring in very big names, too, like Al Gore, Ashley Judd and Jane Fonda. Most events are free, unless a meal is included, but even then the prices are reasonable.
The staff is really helpful, too, and when you call looking for a book they’ll always search the shelves, even for used books, to see if they have them.
