307. Cafe on the Common

Café on the Common is a delightful little gem right on the main street in downtown Ross. On this cold and drizzly Thursday, it was the perfect place to pop into for lunch, all snug and warm with yummy fragrances in the air. People of all ages were coming in and out, some grabbing lunch or pastries to go, others sitting down with friends or babies. The back patio wasn’t an option today with the rain, but on the mostly nice days we have here in Ross, it usually is a fabulous place to enjoy your meal.

Even though the menu is not really long, everything on it is delicious, and mainly organic and homemade. Today I ordered their highly regarded Fattoush Salad, along with a lightly crunchy panini. Unfortunately, they were out of the squash soup – I guess I wasn’t the only one looking to be warmed up! The woman behind me in line volunteered that their granola was simply fabulous, as are their pain au chocolat, which she swears are better than the ones she gets in Paris. That’s actually the second time someone has told me about their pain au chocolat, so next time that’s what I’m ordering. The pastry they’re most famous for is their blueberry scone, which is absolutely stuffed with blueberries.

They open nice and early in the morning, but close at four, so if you’re planning a leisurely afternoon coffee, don’t get too late a start! Also, they sell their gourmet granola here as well as at a lot of the upscale markets around the Bay Area. You can also buy it online.
