330. The Bicycle Works

Today I discovered The Bicycle Works, a very cool store/classroom/workshop/organization for bicycles, bicycle repair and bicycling in Marin. It is designed as a community hub for bicycles and bicyclists, where there is a very welcoming atmosphere to anyone interested in bicycles and biking for pleasure or transportation or both. They offer free bike repair classes, daily drop in advice and training on bike repair, tools to work on your bike, and on the retail side also offer cargo, electric and used bikes for sale, parts, accessories, electric bike conversions, and bicycle repair services.

The Founding Director, Jelani Bertoni, makes a point of welcoming kids into the shop, where they can learn not only how to repair their bikes, but also how to help out, run the shop and even earn money over the Summer.

The Bicycle Works offers annual memberships for $100, which helps support the coop and buys you “guilt free” access to all of the tools, as well as discounts on parts, services and accessories. Their focus of providing an educational environment centered around the bicycle as a force for positive community development is one I really support and love seeing them succeed at!
