On Wednesday, the Twin Cities of Larkspur and Corte Madera hold their annual (and terrific) 4th of July parade, festival and pancake breakfast. The day starts off in three locations: the American Legion Pancake Breakfast and flag raising ceremony at 8:00; the Festival at the Corte Madera Town Park at 9:00; and the parade from the parking lot at Redwood High School at 10:30.
The American Legion (downtown Larkspur at 500 Magnolia Drive) serves a great breakfast with pancakes, sausage, fruit, coffee, tea, milk and orange juice from 8:30 – 11:00. It’s their annual fundraiser to support Boy & Girl Scout troops, and little league teams. They also sell Gin Fizzes using the American Legion’s 1928 recipe!
The parade gets rolling at 10:30 onto Dougherty Drive. It turns down Magnolia Avenue and rolls through downtown Larkspur, then along Magnolia until it reaches downtown Corte Madera and turns left on Redwood Avenue, which it follows until it reaches Corte Madera Town Park. The parade is true Americana, with Boy Scout troops waving flags from flatbeds, veterans driving old army vehicles, marching bands, marching sports teams, and candy being tossed to the crowds lining the streets.
The festival runs all day from 9:00 – 5:00. There are terrific food booths from a number of local restaurants, bands playing continuously on the band stand, dozens of arts and crafts booths, and play and carnival areas for kids.
There were an estimated 15,000+ attendees last year, but it’s still pretty easy to find a great spot along the parade route. I recommend riding your bikes if possible because parking can be difficult.
