Bungalow 44

It’s a nippy Friday so where am I headed tonight? Bungalow 44, downtown Mill Valley. This restaurant and bar has just the right atmosphere to warm you up physically, gastronomically and emotionally. Maybe we’ll get a table in the “Fireplace Room” which is nice and toasty with the roaring fire.  The booths in the main room are cozy, too, with their leather banquettes and linen tablecloths. And, if it’s just the two of us, we’re always open to counter seating, which keeps us near the grills and under the warm pendant lights. Plus, the food prep is so mesmerizing that I quickly forget about anything but what they’re doing and what I’m eating.

The bar is always packed, with the many regulars or folks who didn’t book a table ahead. They make great cocktails and have a long list of wines by the glass – from all over, not just California. I usually start with a glass of champagne (why not, it’s date night, right?)

I’ve never been disappointed in my meals. Hmm, that sounds like I’ve been underwhelmed, which is definitely not the case. Some of my favorite main dishes are the three-variety stuffed peppers, the steak frites, and the goat cheese ravioli. Their beignets are finger-lickin’ good, so I try to save room for that.

You’ll definitely want to book a table ahead (you can book online) and there’s only a small parking lot so do-it-yourselfers will probably need to allow a few extra minutes to find street parking. Otherwise, there’s valet parking.
