Because of the large Italian immigrant population in Marin throughout its 20th century growth, bocce ball has long been a favorite pastime and there are bocce courts all over Marin. However, Bar Bocce is the first instance I’ve seen of a restaurant/bar with a bocce court, and I have to say I love the idea.
This restaurant/bar/bocce court succeeds for a number of different reasons, but the reason the bocce court makes so much sense is that it fits perfectly into the indoor-outdoor-at the water’s edge location, as well as the site and restaurant design. The smallish restaurant/bar transitions out onto a deck, then down about three feet to a huge outdoor patio dining area, then down about another foot to the bocce court, and from there down further onto a sandy area, the rocks and the Bay.
The food is definitely not second fiddle to the bocce court – it’s excellent. It has an italian theme (surprise!) with a great variety of pizzas, salads, appetizers, and italian and seafood entrees. Desserts are positively decadent – and huge.
The patio is a fabulous place to dine, and even when the Sausalito winds are blowing strong, there’s a large fire pit and overhead radiators to keep you toasty.
