Ever since I heard the name of this mountain (well, tall hill, actually) I’ve loved the image it creates. And, it pretty much lives up to its name of lots of trees and vegetation at the base and pretty much an open grassy hillside by about a third of the way up. Walking or biking it is an excellent work-out and, of course, it’s beautiful. It’s a glorious day for getting out there and doing one of the two!
Starting at Phoenix Lake/Natalie Coffin Greene Park (See #24 for details) is a great place to park if you’ve driven over. Take the path from the parking lot up to Phoenix Lake and go to the right. Just past the drinking fountain look for the marker (see photo) that says “To Bald Mt.” and that’s your trail. It’s a 1.8 mile trek with a pretty constant uphill slope. As you can see, if you are thinking of biking it, it’s for trail bikes, not road bikes.
