204. Miwok Park

If you’re looking for a wonderful park for group outings, Miwok Park in Novato is a great choice. It’s got great set-ups for small or large groups, with many picnic tables clustered together, big barbeque pits, 2 bocce courts, a horseshoe pit, a large lawn for volleyball or badminton, smaller lawns for other activities, and a creek running down one side for wading and splashing.

The park is situated on the site of an actual Miwok village. The Miwoks were a native people of Marin. It is the home of the Marin Museum of the American Indian, which is a small museum and gift shop, with about four small rooms. They have visiting exhibits, the current  one being “Jewelry of California and the Southwest”. There are some beautiful pieces, and a number of them are for sale. There is also a Coastal Miwok village diorama and some historical artifacts such as arrowheads, baskets, pottery and photos.

Dogs are also allowed, and they’ve got plastic doggie bag dispensers at the entrances to make it easy to clean up after your dog!
