354. Le Chalet

Here’s a restaurant that’s a lot of fun to go to if you’re in the mood for a hearty and delicious beef bourguignon stew on a cold winter’s day. Le Chalet Basque restaurant has been tucked out of the way in the Santa Venitia neighborhood for many decades, and has many long and loyal patrons. It serves very good Basque food (think French, mainly) in a relaxed and somewhat of a throw-back but good ambiance.

Another part of the restaurant that’s a little harder to appreciate in the winter, but is fabulous in warmer weather, is the outdoor patio, covered with tables and umbrellas. Since this is one of those all too rare restaurants where you are never rushed with the service, it’s a wonderful place to spend warm days and evenings with friends and family without worrying about taking up a table for too long.

They’re open for both lunch and dinner, and have extensive choices on both menus. I also like their duck confit, which is one of their daily specials (Tuesdays), and their Poulet Chalet Basque (chicken au jus with garlic mushrooms). Their french fries are also excellent.
